Oh! How I miss dancing !
The pure joy of movement to music can release the tensions of the week and give rise to many smiles.
I loved dancing as a child, dance class in University, and dancing in plays like “Chicago” and “Spinoff” (above) as an actress.
Once upon a time ,Terry and I took up ballroom dancing through Arthur Murray Dance studio.
We LOVED our weekly sessions with Samantha (our instructor in the top right photo with us and Santa).
This was probably the last time I could physically do something like this as even then I had to wear a knee brace on each leg.
The joy far outweighed the pain though and it felt wonderful to hold my partner and spend an hour or two Waltzing or doing the Cha Cha or maybe the Tango among other dances.
In the photos above I am wearing a dress that I had made for our very first ( and last! ha ha) Ballroom Dance competition. It was super exciting to be a part of that experience and the audience was SO supportive.
Children have no reservations or shyness about dancing. Put on music …and away they go. One of our grandsons (the smaller of the two in the video) has always said he wants to actually BE a dancer when he grows up.
I love the discombobulated legs of my twins above in dance class, ( ha ha), our Marcel dancing for fun on a huge stage in Rosebud, Alberta, and him looking longingly at dancers as he awaits his first official dance class this year.
Do you ever put music on and just dance around your house? I like the lyrics, “ Dance like no one’s watching…”.
I just remembered that the very first time I hurt one of my knees was when I was in rehearsal as the lead tap dancer in the play, “Dames At Sea”. Right before the production went to the stage I blew out my knee when my metal taps slipped on the cement rehearsal flooring and my foot went one way and my knee went the other. Youch! I ended up wearing a cast ( in the cast!) and good thing it was a comedy because for the big tap number at the end of the show I had to WALK around , waving a flag while my cast mates did the actual ‘tapping’.
In my dreams I can still dance. I can spin and run and feel the joy of movement that way again. I still remember most of the dance moves though and if it were to ever come to pass that I could get my knees healed in some way …..
But for now I enjoy watching others dance. I still love musicals. I love watching my grandchildren dance. I even love watching leaves dance on a windy day.
Move while you can! Feel the rhythm of the music and just let go!
It’s a great day to dance!
