Sharing a Meal
When I go to mass I am joined with my other parishioners and we gather around the table to break bread and remember and celebrate the life, death, and ultimate resurrection of Jesus.
It gives me such hope today that even in our broken world God is aware of our own sufferings and indeed, Christ suffered more than we could actually even imagine. He gave us his Word that ‘not even a sparrow could fall’ (Matthew 10:29-31) without him knowing and that we only have to call his name (Romans 10:13) and we will be saved.
Breaking ‘bread’ with others can be a joy. It is for me.
It can be a cup of tea with a friend that leads to a 2 hour chat! Having my family around our table is a busy but fun time, filled with good food and laughter.
And going over to one of my family’s or friend’s homes is something we’ve all dearly missed during Covid and the many months apart.
I recently had the pleasure of meeting up with my friend, “Shorty”, in St. Albert for a lovely , long lunch. She surprised me with an early Christmas package of goodies and we had some laughs over the large…. metal rooster…she gave me. The ladies beyond the plexiglass near us had a few belly laughs over that gift as well. (I’ll leave it to your imagination as to where that conversation went.)
We also got invited over for a delicious meal at my sister, Paula’s, home. ( All of my sisters are such GOOD cooks! )
The evening conversation flowed while we enjoyed Paula’s Cornish hens, brussel sprouts, ‘smashed’ potatoes, and crispy spiced spinach leaves. We brought the wine and fruit salad with banana bread.
Our daughter, Emily, was recently able to come over and have a cozy night with us as the first snows drifted down. We enjoyed a tourtière (homemade from a bake sale) with caesar salad , Malbec wine, and cake for dessert.
Em just returned from a month away with her partner, Geoff,(who wasn’t feeling well that night and stayed home) and we got to listen to all the stories of a life on the land (tenting). Wow! I could never stay outside by cook fires for all those weeks but they absolutely LOVED it! She filmed a music video for one of her new songs, met new friends, worked hard for neighbours ( plucked 14 turkeys!), and became even closer as a couple. ( As an aside, when they returned home they found out that their band, “Bad Buddy” won Artist of the Year !)
We already know our whole family is coming home for Christmas and we will have the blessing of breaking bread with our 4 children and their wonderful partners and our six grandsons.
