Elk Island Day
30 degrees.
Darren was busy working in his office away from his home office (our art room)and we had a free summer afternoon after Terry’s business call. So we decided to take a road trip to Elk Island.
As you may know this is one of our favourite places to visit. We knew it was a boiling hot day so we got into our bathing suits, packed up our lawn chairs, books, blankets, our beloved Tile Rummy game, beach towels, and stopped off at ”Chopped Leaf” to purchase two large salads for dinner.
The canola is out now and the drive was so pretty.
We found a place in the blazing sun, right across from the water and after we set up our chairs I went straight to it!
Wouldn’t you know it ,but the water was covered in green algae with signs everywhere warning folks to stay out or swim at one’s own peril. UGH.
I remember being at a lake that had the algae but you couldn’t see it. My sister, Paula, and I went swimming in it for the afternoon and that night and evening we were both covered in skin bumps. Double ugh!
What I found amazing was how many people WERE in the water! It was literally covered in green . Children were dunking under it ( probably swallowing some) and even adults were frolicking around in it. I can only imagine how they looked and felt the next day…. yikes!
This trip we didn’t get to see the ‘big guys’ (like the one above right) but some days you can see hundreds of bison in their herds.
Once we knew we couldn’t cool off in the water, we moved into a shaded area and still enjoyed reading our books and playing our game and eating our yummy salads too.
Glad we had the opportunity to do this before the wee ones arrive ready to play with ‘Nonny and Papa’.
