Port Stanley
Terry and I decided to ‘pick a port’ and go out for a photo day. We had hoped that my sister could join us but alas it was not to be.
The skies were a gorgeous blue and everywhere along the route were bright orange pumpkins sitting atop porches. We couldn’t connect our new audio book to the rental car so we just enjoyed the quiet of the day and good conversations.
I just had to pull over to take a few phone shots of the spooky house above. I didn’t bring my heavy Canon camera on this visit so I had to make do with ‘pulling in’ the image with my phone. And I love the beauty of the tall pampas grasses that can be seen all around southwestern Ontario.
Port Stanley is a community in the municipality of Central Elgin, Elgin County in Ontario, Canada. It is located on the north shore of Lake Erie at the mouth of Kettle Creek. A few years ago, it had a population of 2,148.
The internet said: “Today, Port Stanley is still known for its large beach but also for its wonderful boutiques, antique shops, railroad, art galleries and theatre. It has a rich history, superb dining, comfortable accommodations and a range of services for its residents and the many guests who visit this beautiful harbour community.”
But the funny thing is, is that after driving for four hours to get there we were starving and so looking forward to a lovely meal in a quaint restaurant…. but the whole town seemed to be shut down for the fall. Ha ha. It is obviously a summer holiday destination (like Sylvan Lake near Edmonton) and once summer is over….’good-bye tourists’! We tried several pubs/restaurants and every one said, “closed”. So off we went to St. Thomas in the hopes of finding dinner. Of course before we left we had to pose Terry near some ‘Big Things’ and check out an open antique store.
Funnily enough, we ended up eating at a fast food type diner (Wimpy’s again!) because St. Thomas looked a little ‘sketchy’ that evening with most places closed, boarded up, and the folks on the street a little ‘tough’ looking. It was a good meal and we even shared a chocolate/banana milkshake on the way back . Yum.
We passed SO many orchards on our drives that day so I wanted to pull over and get some shots of the red red apples just dripping from the trees. But there were also all different colours of apples from yellow to orange/reds.
I just love the beauty of Ontario. Oddly, the wonderful autumn in this province can be one of the most perfect places to witness those wonderful fire colours but it has been so warm that the trees haven’t turned yet. But we passed glorious trees allowed to grow to their natural shapes and God covered his sky canvas in a stunning sunset almost all the way home.
As you know, we love our road trips and it’s so fun to explore places in a whole different part of Canada. I highly recommend you visit if you ever have the chance. Say ‘hello !’ to my folks!
