The Girls’ Weekend Away

Two years ago my sisters and I went away for our annual “Girls’ Weekend Away”. We have been doing this for almost 40 years every May Long Weekend.

We have created a bond so strong that it is unbreakable and the laughter and love we share keeps us going until we meet again the next year. Paula and I live in Western Canada and Mary and Pamela live in Eastern Canada but Paula and I have managed to fly out almost yearly to enjoy this special weekend at the start of a family visit that has now extended to a month away.

Covid was the one thing that stopped us. But with the borders open and our family doubly vaxxed we decided to fly out once again.

Paula rented a very large SUV and she proceeded to load up the sisters and their luggage as she drove from abode to abode. Of course I had the most luggage because I now have to travel with mobility aids but we got us comfortably wedged in and ready to ride!

What we didn’t expect was a funny joke gift to start us off! Terry arranged to have Mum wrap up gifts that he sent out in the form of adult sized bibs for all of us. HA HA HA. It was hilarious and somewhat embarrassing but I fully embraced the joke as I seem to be the messiest eater!

Our mum has always been a huge fan of ‘truck stop restaurants’ as she says they have huge amounts of food for cheap prices..ha ha. So off we went to the 18 Wheeler Restaurant and you know what? It really WAS good! We took some silly photos of us wearing those crazy bibs.

Then it was off to Chatham where we were hoping to go 2 years ago before the world fell apart. Although the nice hotel was booked I was able to find us an economical accommodation at The Comfort Inn. The girls were hoping to do some shopping at our 2 favourite stores (The Birdie’s Nest and The Glasshouse) and ….success! The photo (above right) is the wall of The Birdie’s Nest.

Then it was off for lunch at The Chilled Cork. Although quite pricey, the food there is always yummy. We decided to just get a sweet and a drink.

This restaurant is a part of the “Retro Hotel” where we are booked for next year’s G.W.A. God willing.

The Hotel is SO cool as it is filled with incredible, kitschy artwork. The “Rolling Stone’s” mouth art is completely made out of squished coke cans. I loved the telephones and the fun mirror too. My crème brûlée was DE lish. Then on the way to the Comfort Inn I spotted the fun….’Panters’ as opposed to planters…ha ha

We love to make each other laugh and Mary is always cracking me up with her antics. Love her supposed popcorn purchase…ha ha. Mary bought cute “Lays” earrings for me and I just happened to buy that product for each of us. We had a nice dinner that evening at Tru’s restaurant. Although it’s a pain, we felt happy that every place asked us for our Covid passports. Later that evening we played Tile Rummy in the hotel dining area and Paula had one of the biggest ‘skunks’ I’ve ever seen!

Our Smitty’s breakfast was pretty good even though our waitress kept approaching us with her mask below her nose. Ugh.

We decided on that rainy day to go to a matinee. So, although I had seen it, we all went to see the movie, “Dear Evan Hansen”. Oh My Gosh. It is THE biggest tear jerker. It is also THE best movie. The story, the cast, the directing, and of course the music. It is hard to watch at times and I thought I would be sort of immune to tears after knowing the story but….nope. If anything, I was more emotional because I was near by beautiful sisters.

Our last stop was to Kelsey’s and we asked the server what size we would get for four to have nachos. The most MASSIVE platter arrived and we all cracked up. But, they were good and we had great conversations about the movie and things that happened to us in high school that related to the themes in the movie.

I’m sad to have to wait again to be together with all four of us sisters. This time is such a gift to all of us.
