Dream Again

It was a stormy ride to Rosebud the other day.

The skies were dark but our hearts were light with anticipation that Terry’s new musical script would find its way to even more improvements with the help of the professional cast of readers we would meet that evening. Terry has already adapted the script 13 times!

After a quick lunch at “The Dub” at the halfway point of our journey we headed back into the driving rain.

We had our audiobook for company and we actually finished “Sabriel” on the way home. That gift from our daughter, Lana, turned out to be a fantasy adventure similar to a “Lord of the Rings” type book. We enjoyed it!

We made the familiar turn to enter into the curving, country roads that lead into the small hamlet of Rosebud and just like that, the skies started to clear.

After settling into our room (the only guests at the Country Inn that evening) , B.J. served us a perogie dinner that we had just enough time to eat and then it was time to bustle off to the Mercantile building to meet the cast of readers for the evening.

We had far less performers this time because Terry has amalgamated the characters and streamlined many scenes too.

As before, the readers did a pretty good job. It is SO valuable to be able to hear the play read aloud (and the music played live in the right spots )as opposed to just reading it oneself.

We could both tell how the script would flow ….even with the stage directions being read aloud which obviously slows the time down…. and what worked and what didn’t.

Some of the actors might not have read the lines the way we envisioned (too slow, not enough energy type of thing) but generally I could certainly see that this thirteenth incarnation is tight and almost stage worthy now! ( In my opinion.)

Terry had a little more trouble hearing what I heard because he had to concentrate on which instrument he had to play next ….he did all the music himself of course.

We were there from 7 pm to near 11 pm . Morris ( the Artistic Director and champion of the play) did a great job preparing the room with snacks and drinks, tables and chairs set up, and reading the stage directions.

It is super exciting for all of us that Rosebud received a hefty grant to help us get this thing off the ground. With luck, they might even consider staging the show next year!

Back in our Inn the next morning, I ‘reloaded’ the gift counter with books I have illustrated that seem to be selling out. Pretty cool.

It was a quick trip so off we went again the very next day to return home after a lovely, breakfast from “B.J.” at the Country Inn. The skies were sunny and our hopes are high.

VERY proud of Terry and what he has already accomplished with this heartwarming play based on his parent’s life and the power of love that can emanate from a supportive community.
