Happy 90th, Dad!

On May 3rd my dad turned 90!

I wanted to do something a little special for him so I put this announcement in the Windsor Star……

90 years young! Dennis Drew came to Canada as a 'British Guest' to escape the war and after his safe return home he once again returned to Canada as a young man where he would eventually meet his bride to be, Mary Anne Pike at their place of work, Chrysler. Dennis eventually became very active in the Catholic Church (St.Gregory's-now"Good Shepherd") sits on several boards, is active in the Knights of Columbus, and sang beautifully in the choir with his wife and 5 children for years. He worked at the University of Windsor as Director of Administrative Services and is loved by all who have had the pleasure of knowing him. Today he paints gorgeous originals at least 3 times a day and loves antiquing, and reading among other past times. Happy birthday, Dad! We love you SO much.

It’s almost hard to believe that he’s 90 because he is so vibrant, fun, and artistic too.

I had the pleasure of celebrating (with) him and all of my siblings last night. These moments are such a gift. My sister, Paula, flew in from Edmonton to join myself and our other sisters and brother who live nearby in Windsor. And our Uncle Dave and Aunt Heather also met up with us to have dinner at one of Dad’s favourite restaurants, ‘Red Lobster’.

You can see my handsome Dad up top on his actual birthday that he celebrated on the third. Yesterday, during the very hot day I hung out with my sisters, Paula and Mary. At one point I made Mary pose by a painting that seemed in need of a update…ha ha.

I used good old Amazon to send a brand new Tile Rummy game to my parents so we sisters spent some time trying it out at my hotel on the main floor there. We sure enjoy each other’s company.

I’d like to thank those of you who had the time to send our dad a birthday card. We thought it would be fun to ask friends and family to send cards to dad and maybe we would be able to reach 90 cards! Not sure how many he received but they are still coming in and I plan on counting them today.

He also received all kinds of congratulatory certificates from the Prime Minister, various Mayors, Counsellors, etc.. and that was thanks to my brother-in-law, Dave, I believe. SO fun.

My dad loves mail ( who doesn’t?) and still writes a lot of letters himself. He has written authors of his favourite books and because he took the time to write a handwritten letter…they have responded in kind!

Every day he would go to the mailbox and return with a few more cards. Tons of giggles and WAY better than a ton of bills, am I right?

It was funny but Dad told me that he was saving every single envelope because he wanted to write thank-you notes to everyone. When I laughed and said that I would do this digitally and include the photo at the title of this blog he said, “Phew, that was going to be a lot of work!” ha ha.

Soon it was dinner time and we were off to Red Lobster…..

To be continued……
