Fur Trade Fort
On the way out of town, Terry and I decided to take a look around the Rocky Mountain House Fort.
It was fitting that there were buffalo right outside the buffalo cut outs at the entrance. The Fort was the site of the first fur traders in that area and we enjoyed walking through the nice museum and reading about the history.
The demonstrations was also very interesting on that hot day. One woman showed us how the “Bay Blanket” coats (Capotes)were created and she demonstrated how she stitched together and beaded a purse out of a blanket. We also listened to a talk about the fur trade and the different kind of pelts that were bartered.
I always love a blacksmith demonstration and the fellow at this location did not disappoint. He showed us how to create a simple nail and it is a lot of hot, back breaking work just to make one!
The smoke from the B.C. wildfires was palpable and you could smell it as well. It made the skies appear white and I wondered if we will always have summers like this now.
I stood beside two examples of the original Fort Chimneys and we went for a walk around the grounds before getting on the road and returning home.
It always feels good to come home and this afternoon our families return to keep us company.
