From the Sublime to the Scary

A day can bring one unexpected surprises.

You can wake up and the sun is shining beautifully through your window and you might think…”Nothing could go wrong today.”

And my day did start off great.

I drove over to my sister, Paula’s and we moved over into her car so we could drive to Sherwood Park and go to one of our favourite garden centers, Khulman’s. Paula wanted some large hanging flower baskets, among other plants and so we enjoyed our time there together. I love what she chose. Then it was off to “Branches” for lunch at yet another garden centre called Greenland where we both enjoyed our kale salads and their homemade, warm potato chips.

On the way back to my car I got a call from my husband.

He was in distress, serious distress, tears, lower abdominal pain and off to the hospital. Click. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt so scared. So worried. But I tried to trust that all would be well in the end.

I got on the phone to my ‘prayer warriors’ and asked them to pray immediately.

Terry sent me a quick text to say he was off to the Royal Alex hospital. I drove home, (in quite a bit of distress myself!),packed a small shoulder bag with water, my book, a wee snack, my phone charger, etc., and off I went to the hospital to try and find him.

It took us over 8 hours to find out that Terry had a kidney stone. During that time I watched how the morphine took his pain away immediately and how when it wore off he immediately curled over in dire pain.

I watched him vomit and try to get comfortable. I watched his kindness and as repeatedly thanked the EMS paramedics, nurses, and doctors for their help. I prayed a lot.

Finally, at about 12:30 am we were allowed to leave with ‘scripts’ and a vomit bag in hand ….which was well used.

The next day, after a pretty good sleep, Terry woke up ….and felt fine!

He had an almost 4 hour nap, didn’t need pain meds, and actually went to a work meeting.

A day can bring one unexpected surprises.

P.S. I wanted to end the tale here but the pain returned with a vengence….still waiting for relief….
