Front Porch Concert June 2022

Summer concert series

Summer concert series

It was a lesson in trust. It was a lesson in faith. And God was merciful and it was good!

All week prior the weather reports promised : “Sunday : 26 degrees and sunny”.

Terry had the front porch completely transformed into our stage for the first Front Porch Concert of the summer by about 3 pm and the skies were blue. ( I have a new apparatus to help me get up after the show….see above)

Sometime around 4:30, 5:00 p.m. the wind kicked up and when we looked to the north the skies were very dark. Oh Oh.

I checked my weather app and sure enough it said that thunderstorms were to arrive and last from about 6 pm to 10 pm. UGH! Our sound check was due to happen at 6 pm!

It wasn’t long before the rains came and they came in hard with the accompanying lightening. There were choices to be made. Should I panic? Should we cancel? Should we cover the equipment and pray?

We chose the last option. My sister, Paula and I ( Paula was due to perform with me) prayed over the telephone for the storm to end for the sake of our performer, Beth Portman. I thought of the apostles in the boat with Jesus and how little faith they had that he could calm the storm. I knew he could calm this storm and I knew I had faith!

I felt SO happy when the skies did indeed clear up just in time for sound check! Beth arrived in her galoshes and with her umbrella in hand.

Beth set up her equipment which was cleverly hidden away in baskets and old fashioned suitcases. She has a ‘looper’ machine which she uses like the pro she is. It allowed her to do her own harmonies and sound effects and Beth played her own tunes and versions of old timey songs.

My sister, Paula, came over to sing harmonies with our opening act and she did some percussion too. She was great! Terry started off the show with two of his own tunes (Both about drinking…..ironic since he doesn’t drink… ha ha) I played djembé and sang harmony for him.

Paula and I sure looked like sisters! We decided to dress similarly and we even had similar hairstyles!

I chose 3 of my older songs, “What Am I Gonna Do?, When It’s Time, and I Know It’s You” and I felt very confident and I feel we sang well.

I was so happy that we had such a nice little crowd, some people cancelled for sure, but when the neighbours started to stroll in from all around it was even better. Beth was SUCH a good performer and she really entertained the crowd and made over $300. in tips and album sales. Woo hoo!

I’m so happy that it all worked out and after the tear down we invited the girls to join us for a late dinner. Paula had to run but Beth stayed and chatted with us until 10:30 pm!

She gifted us with a C.D. swag bag which also included a wee bubble wand , and a ‘cupcake’ shaker (she has a song about cupcakes!) ,and her card.

I’m so glad I trusted and was gifted with a lovely evening of music and friendship.

May music also fill you with joy today! ( Copy and paste the link below to hear a snippet of Beth!)
