Easter Island Statues
I’ve never been to Easter Island but I’ve always wanted to. Have you been there?
The other day I was scrolling through my ‘feed’ and I saw one photo of an Easter Island statue but I was astonished with what I was seeing.
We’ve seen National Geographic images, I’m sure. We’ve likely seen friends’ photos from their trips. We might have even seen cartoons or memes using the heads.
But what I just found out is that originally these ‘heads’ were attached to bodies and above ground!
And look how BIG they are!!!!
The backs are so intricate as well!
All photos are from the “Easter Island Statue Project”.
Here are some facts from their article…..
“Archaeologists have documented 887 of the massive statues, known as moai, but there may up as many as 1,000 of them on the island. Most were carved from volcanic rock between 1100 and 1680.
While the island is a popular tourist destination, the statue’s sheer size certainly discourages the type of theft experienced at other historic archaeological sites.”
Isn’t that something?
