High Tea at the Prince of Wales
All day I had been looking forward to our “High Tea” at the famous Prince of Wales Hotel.
I must admit that we have travelled quite a bit together in our 39+ years and we have allowed ourselves to experience many a high tea around the world.
A few of my favourites are the high teas at “Brown’s” in England, The Empress Hotel in Victoria, and a place in Richmond, B.C. of which I can no longer recall the name. The decor was all black and white with tea cups glued to the wall. I’ve had wonderful tea experiences with my sisters on our “Girl’s Weekends Away” and Terry and I have even enjoyed high tea at Rutherford House in Edmonton and at The Selkirk Hotel at Fort Edmonton once upon a time.
So it was with great anticipation that we booked online at the Waterford Lakes P. of W.’s Hotel for a later sitting so it would serve as our dinner as well.
Imagine our surprise when we discovered there was a glitch in their computer system and they actually stopped serving high tea at 4 pm. ( this is more in keeping with high tea times around the world).
But I was surely disappointed as I did get my hopes up for this experience that night.
The kind manager of the restaurant checked with their chef and they decided they could honour our online booking !
We probably should have just rebooked …ha ha. The sandwiches were definitely not fresh but they did their best to please. And honestly, it was actually the least impressive High Tea we’ve had. Ah well. Don’t let that dissuade you. High Tea is usually set up with lovely, crisp table cloths, and with the prettiest tea services around.
One usually has several, wee, fresh sandwiches on the first plate and the scones are large and come with jam and clotted cream. In this pandemic, often scary world, sometimes it’s just nice to treat yourself to a lovely experience.
Save up your coins and book a high tea near you!
