Baddeck, Cape Breton
A rainy day proved to be a fine fit with wandering around the lovely town of baddeck. On the way there I discovered the engine light was on in our van but terry had been aware of it and guessed it might be our loose gas cap. I was nervous because we have many more miles to go on this journey. So after our yummy lunch at the dancing goat (!) ( Best egg salad sandwich ever) we talked about what we should do about this when we didn’t have a big automotive centre available to us that might have a larger chrysler dealership with the equipment needed to assess the problem.
Would you believe that soon after this conversation we turned a corner and there stood a fairly large chrysler dealership and a nice employee/owner (?) Who had an electric diagnostic tool which confirmed the engine light was telling us that our gas cap was loose. Phew ! God is good !
So with peace of mind for both of us we continued on to town and enjoyed checking out the area, nearby antique shop ( I did find a wee treasure here for my dad) and the alexander graham bell museum .
Did you know that a.g.bell invented so much more than the telephone ? I was so surprised to find out that among his many many inventions he invented : devices for providing drinking water from human breath, devices for transmitting and receiving underwater sounds, a metal detector, air conditioning, photo phonics and he built a hydrofoil that broke the surface/water speed record.
He studied genetics to help sheep farmers’ production, and he worked with helen keller on a project that his own father developed called the vocal alphabet. Incredible ! ( In fact he fell in love with one of his subjects and thus, mabel, who was deaf, became his wife and mother of his children) . Alexander was not a professional inventor but a man who loved learning for its own sake. Lucky us !
We later enjoyed a tasty pizza at the “yellow cello” before heading off to see a play at theatre baddeck called ” sexy laundry ” . It was a well acted story of a middle aged couple who were in a hotel room, trying to bring some magic back into their stale marriage. It was funny and heartbreaking too.
