The New Library

The new downtown library is amazing.

I had the opportunity to watch the construction of it in a time lapse video online. I also took a virtual tour. But I rarely drive downtown and so when my son and his family asked if I wanted to join them for a library and City Hall water pool afternoon I said a resounding,”Yes!”

Parking was a little tricky as The Taste Of Edmonton is back this year. That’s a good thing though. I did find the entrance to the Library parkade and met the ‘fam’ just inside the doors. WOW! What a first impression! The first thing one notices is a massive interactive, virtual wall. My children had already been to the library during this visit and last time they were there the wall was a dinosaur display. This time is was an underwater scene and if you press your finger to the wall, the fish will come to you. Then if you press ON a fish it will tell you the name of it!

The “Kids’” room is of course beautiful with Ipads for video games and lower sized book shelves among hundreds of other amenities.

Heading upstairs one sees all kinds of things besides books…even though books are the main draw. There are recording studios(all you need is a library card!), 3 D printers, computers, photography centres, and even a gaming room!

I am SO impressed. And I can’t wait to return.

Have you been to YOUR local library lately?
