More Than Meets The Eye

I like to think that most of us are trying to be good people.

But sometimes a judgement about somebody comes into our mind or from our mouth.

A mother is standing at the checkout at Costco and her child is crying loudly and the mother just loses it and tells her to SHUT UP!

I might think : “ That mum doesn’t have a lot of patience. “ Or “ Her child is such a misbehaving kid. That mum should get some control over this situation.” Or “ That mum shouldn’t have brought her child to this store. She should have left her at home with someone.” ETC….

I’m in a lineup and I am cranky too. The line isn’t moving and maybe I have nothing better to do than just judge that mother.

But perhaps that mother’s husband died this week. There is no one at home to watch the toddler so she had to bring her to Costco to buy some supplies for guests after the funeral. The mum is alone, frightened, depressed, and the last place she wants to be is out shopping.

But we all do it. We can make judgement calls about what people are wearing , how they style their hair, what they’re driving, and on and on. We don’t even MEAN to do it. But our first glance at something is not always what we think it is.

Don’t look at the people above. What else do you see?
