The Alberta Aviation Museum

We took our M to the Aviation Museum after he worked with “Papa” on a wonderful craft in the morning. More about that later.

M has a wonderfully developed sense of humour at his young age, a sweet disposition, is well behaved, and attentive. So you can imagine that the day went very smoothly with lots of laughs along the way.

I myself have always wanted to check out this museum and this is the first time I’ve had a chance to peek inside.

The Alberta Aviation Museum is very well presented, laid out, and filled with the wonderful history of flight in our city and beyond.

The colour is the first thing that grabbed me as many of the early aircraft were painted in bright yellows, greens, reds, or some other bright and visible colours.

We took our time meandering around the paths and read to Mvarious signs that caught his interest.

Although there weren’t ‘specific’ things for children at the museum, M asked many questions and we directed him to interesting facts about the old aircraft that we saw there.

We saw the old ‘skeleton’ of a plane, aircraft from the 1700s until modern day, women’s roles in aviation, a helicopter, and so much more…and the layout of the place was easy to manoeuvre .

M’s interest really perked up a notch when we found the interactive section where he could press buttons and listen to a voice directing him to the next virtual page.

The whole experience ramped up to 10 when we discovered the virtual flying planes. Woohoo! Mloved trying not to crash the plane (unsuccessful) ha ha, and we loved that he had so much fun pressing all of the knobs and trying the levers.

The docent on site that introduced himself to us as “Bruce” was a very nice and knowledgable man who had a little chat with us about the school they usually run on location there.

After about two hours inside, we headed outside to look at five more planes and then enjoyed a picnic at the tables right there just before a storm blew in.

It is wonderful to get close to our little grandsons with this one-one-one kind of day and we’re so happy we were given the chance to do it!
