Donor Appreciation

We received a wonderful invite to join the good folks at Rosebud, Alberta, for a ‘Donor Appreciation’ weekend.

The weather was perfect so we completely enjoyed our 3 1/2 hour drive down to enjoy being ‘spoiled’ by our friends there.

We stayed at the “Banks and Braes” B & B which is currently being built in town. They plan on eventually having 9 guest suites but we were lucky to snag one of the few that are finished. We usually stay with “B.J.” at the Country Inn but because there were over 250 people that expressed affirmatively that they would be attending the weekend…there was ‘no room at the inn’…ha ha.

In the above photos you can see our B & B, their unusual quonset, and their very decorated living room as you enter the front door. The owners are pouring a lot of love into this place but I must say that it would suit younger/more mobile people than myself or many of the Rosebud patrons who are seniors. There are stairs to get in (with a beautiful but slippery, stone railing) and all the rooms were up the stairs….and there are 3 floors!

This is from their website….As we continue to develop, we hope to add not only room options but also various events. We imagine things like writers retreats, Regency dance lessons, murder-mystery weekends, and lots and lots of parties! Come and grow with us in the wonderful, creative hamlet of Rosebud! Our name was taken from the works of Scottish poet Robbie Burns. It seemed fitting for our location on the banks of the Rosebud River, and surrounded by the braes, or hillsides, of this lovely valley!

The owners have put a lot of thought into their many furniture choices and artistic walls. I really like the looks of the ‘blue’ room above. We stayed in the room in the next image which was quite crowded with furniture. It should also be noted that there is no air conditioning.

We did enjoy a yummy waffles breakfast in the dining room and it included homemade jellies and sweet rhubarb sauce.

Soon it was off to the ‘welcome’ portion of the day where folks had the option of choosing from many snacks and drinks before the Artistic Director and then the Head of the School for the Arts welcomed us, a talented student played guitar and sang her original song for us, and the lovely Cassie, who played Maria in their recent “The Sound of Music” sang for us.

That evening we got to enjoy a wonderful buffet dinner and a world premier play of “Magic Lies” played by the incredibly talented Nathan Schmidt as “W.O. Mitchell”. It was an EXCELLENT, funny, and touching one man show and everyone LOVED it.

Oh! The guests were all asked to sit with ‘strangers’ during the pre-show dinner. We sat with a really nice couple named “Vic and Bev” and there were lots of ‘small world’ things that went on that evening.

Their son owns the B & B that we stayed in and their grandson happened to be our busboy that night. Also we knew 2 people at the table right next to us! Valerie is a Calgary director and she seemed very interested in Terry’s play! She was there with her daughter and it was cool to catch up with the two of them after not seeing them for over 25 years!

Soon it was time to head home and we enjoyed the gorgeous scenery of this incredible Alberta town and surrounding area.

It you haven’t been…you must go someday.
