Holden on…
The other day we had a delightful drive to Holden, Alberta, with the intention of enjoying the day and checking out an old church that was turned into an artisan venue. (Thanks, Shorty).
It was the nicest weather of the week and considering the next day required us to be back to heavy coats I’m sure glad we took advantage of it.
Like most small towns we have visited in Alberta this one had a very small main street with many shops boarded up or falling down. Sad.
But what I love is the character of these old buildings and to me the peeling paint just adds to that character and makes me think, “If only those old walls could talk….”.
Smack in the middle of main street there is a nice memorial that was constructed in 1923 in memory of the two world wars,Korea and Peace Keeping. The local Legion has historically held a parade there every year on November 11th.
It was easy to find the white church-store so we parked in front and proceeded to knock on the door. It struck me as funny that the local volunteer couldn’t get the ancient door to open so Terry worked on it from the outside and soon we were welcomed into the lovely space just packed with beautiful, one of a kind wares.
We really wanted to support the craft shop as all monies received are put into maintaining the building and if the front door was any indication whatever we could give would be appreciated. We found a few treasures, took our leave and headed off to the small park by a pond to have our picnic. Thank goodness we took refuge in the gazebo there as it turned out to be a warm but very windy experience.
After a simple “Ploughman’s” lunch and our usual Tile Rummy game we headed off towards another “Alberta World’s Biggest” statue.
To be continued…...
