The Buzz About Busby

Have you ever just gotten into your vehicle and headed out with no destination in mind?

Terry and I do this often.

We like to cue up our latest audio book and just pick a direction : North, South, East, or West…and head out!

This gives us a chance to explore different areas surrounding the city while enjoying each other’s company …and the book!

The other day we did just that because it was another fairly warm day. And although the sun left us by the time we started out , the roads were pretty dry so we took off for a new adventure.

We decided to head North and West. We are still listening to our audiobook that we received from Lana for Christmas ( Sabriel) and it is the most imaginative fantasy type book.

During our drive we noticed a few things that might become future paintings for ‘yours truly’ so we made the stops to get the photos you can see above. I’m still enjoying painting vehicles for my (someday!) “Ways To Get There” series so I was happy to find the old car, truck, and bus.

It’s amazing how many tiny towns/hamlets there are in and around Edmonton.

We will just take random turns here and there and see where it leads us. That day we ended up in the wee hamlet of “Busby”.

Located in Westlock, the website gives some astonishing information about the place :

The Busby Hamlet was founded in 1915 and is home to approximately 100 residents in addition many rural farmers and acreage owners call Busby home.

Busby is a vibrant community with an active Pre-K to 6 school, Volunteer Fire Department, Lions Club, Seniors club, 4-H Club and Gymkhana Club. The Hamlet and surrounding area has a Pizza restaurant, post office, saloon, many trades businesses and various home based businesses. The hamlet has a community hall that can host over 200 people, and a large sports grounds that has two ball diamonds.

We saw these two ball diamonds and we couldn’t believe they were there behind these few homes in the area.

On the Busby School grounds an outdoor skating surface is installed most winters with help from volunteers and the Busby Fire Department.

Some of the major events held in the community is Busby Farmers Day which is held the second weekend in June to celebrate our community and farmers. Farmers Day has a parade, ball tournament, pancake breakfast, gymkhana competition, farmers market and many other activities.

The Busby Lions club hosts an annual ladies night each year which is always a sold out crowd. Every November the Double Diamond 4-H club hold an annual turkey bingo. The community also hosts a meet the neighbour night, town wide garage sale, Christmas market and a town wide clean up and fire smart day.

When we drove in we were incredulous that there was actually a hotel there too.

This may be a very very tiny Hamlet but there is lots going on in Busby.

Have you ever just headed out with no destination in mind? Try it! You never know what you’ll find!
