Painting With My Family
I don’t take it for granted that I come from a family of artistic people.
I certainly ‘come by it honestly’ as they say as both of our parents are very artistic.
My 89 year old father, Dennis Drew, paints at least 2 times per day. He works from photos sent to him by myself or my mum or sisters and his medium of choice these days is acrylic on canvas paper.
My Dad is wonderful at intricate detail and he makes each work his own ( he tells us he is colour blind !) with unique colours and design choices. My favourites are his vehicle paintings ….his boats are always fantastic….and I also love his old barns, castles, and other mages from their European travels.
He cranks up the rock music (our Dad still loves his Deep Purple and Journey type bands) and gets to work in their inspiring, small art studio off of the kitchen area.
On this particular day I painted with Dad, our Mum, and my sister, Paula from Edmonton.
Mum has been enjoying creating puzzles more than original art lately but she worked on a new card for her homemade greeting card collection. She prints out lovely, simple cards from her paintings and then places them on pretty, layered card stock. I’ve stolen quite a few of these over the years…ha ha.
Paula tried out some new, metallic paints that Mum owns and she can be seen above holding her finished creation.
Mum helped set me up on one end of the dining room table with the natural light at my back. Dad lent me his new, little acrylic paints, and I worked from a phone photo I borrowed from my friend, Anne Hodgson, of this old boat on a beach.
It was fun to try and bring the image to life.
Hours can fly by when I create a new work. I have been suffering with a pinched nerve in my neck/shoulder which has prevented me from painting or playing guitar lately so it felt great to finally feel well enough to participate with the family.
I hope to be able to have a few of these kind of days.
