I love Small Towns.
One of my absolute favourite things to do on a sapphire blue sky day is to take a drive out to a small town.
We don’t need a reason ( although in this case we did have one….) more than just the fun of the drive and exploring a new place.
We decided to head out to the Ukrainian town of Mundare for a picnic and a chance to add another corny ‘World’s Biggest’ statue to our photo collection.
You reach Mundare by heading East on the Yellowhead (if you’re from Edmonton) and heading north when you see the sign (about 32 kms past Elk Island).
Mundare is a very small town. Like a lot of towns and cities these days, some of the businesses are shuttered ( probably due to Covid). So sad.
I made a picnic for us and we enjoyed the drive out as we prayed together and chatted until Terry had to take a work call before lunch.
While he was on the call I walked down to through the little, main street and enjoyed the shapes of the old style buildings and the detailed wall art on some of them.
Although restaurants are currently closed due to the pandemic, in past years I have loved to ask a local what the best place in town is for a great sandwich, etc., and we have discovered some gems that we return to year after year because they are that good! The locals always know.
Terry and I eventually enjoyed our lunch of homemade wraps, veggies with hummus, apples, and a big, homemade cookie before we took out our favourite Tile Rummy game.
The sun beamed down on us (and on the World’s biggest sausage of which I had to take the inevitable photograph with Terry nearby. ha ha.)
It was SUCH a lovely afternoon and on the way home we stopped at another interesting small town.
I’ll share that with you on Monday. “ I Love Small Towns. Part Two” .
