Boy, this was a fantastic experience to hear this talented group learn Terry’s music!
None of these folks are guaranteed to be in the final production but the grant paid for their hard work.
I’m sure hoping that some of them will be in the actual show if it works out for the next season of Rosebud’s Theatre in the Opera House there. Some are flying back to university, or are in other shows perhaps, and a few came out from Calgary. But the talent!
After we said our good-byes and “thank-yous” we debriefed for about 45 minutes with the Director, Morris, and Music Director, Luke, (Father and son!) and Terry heard some great ideas for even more changes to his ever changing script and score. The cast had also given him several good ideas so Terry has his work cut out for him again. Incarnation…. 14?
Then we headed off to the buffet lunch at the Opera House and then to see the play, ‘Songs For A New World” .
I can’t say enough about the excellence of this play! AND Morris directed this as well and our rehearsal pianist, Terrah Harper, was just incredible as part of the musician ensemble in this play too.
The show is “ ….a collection of songs and moments in the lives of a quartet of people who gather at a local coffee shop every morning before going off to work…. the songs are the expression of their journey toward making life meaningful……” Morris Ertman, Artistic Director.
The actor/singers in this show are just brilliant. Aaron Krogman who was with us at rehearsals for Dream( in the lead role as “The Songwriter”) was also one of the leads in this show. He played ‘David’ . He along with Alixandra Cowman (Who we know from our years of attending plays there) , Cassia Schmidt as ‘Amy’ ( A friend and wife of Nathan; who was with us in one of the lead roles at rehearsals for Dream ) and Scott Pietrangelo (Michael) who is from Toronto , rounded out the cast.
Jason Robert Brown, (the Book, Music, and Lyrics writer), reminded us of Sondheim with his difficult, perfect ,soaring harmonies. There were funny songs ( Surabaya-Santa) , beautiful ones, (Hear My Song) , sad tunes ( She Cries) and every song was incredibly played by Terrah, David Robinson on bass, and Malcom Lim on percussion. Cassie had such a pure, lovely voice and when the whole cast joined in together to sing this gorgeous music it was wonderful.
If you can, head out to Rosebud to catch the show. It runs until August 28th, 2022.
Can you see that tree growing out of the roof of that shop in the above right photo? Typical Rosebud. So much care for nature and love of art.
Terry and I said our good-byes under sunny skies, stopped at “Earl’s” in Edmonton for dinner on the way home, and our hearts were full after this amazing experience!
