Snap!
Our friend, Caitlin, our daughters’ age and a wonderful artist, invited us to an open house at the SNAP Gallery in Edmonton.
We were happy to check out what they have going on over there and it was a really fun little tour.
Andrew Thorne, a wonderful artist as well, (above left with his art) met us at the door and was there for us if we had any questions and to direct us through the space. He did some cool silk screening and I have also included a couple pieces of Caitlin Bodewitz’s work above right.
There were all kinds of printworks for sale, everything from silk screens to textile wall hangings and hand printed cards. The space itself is clean and bright with lots of walls to display the works of these many talented artists.
After we were done looking at all the artwork, we were invited to the back for a lovely reception. On the way back we passed all kinds of personal studio space rooms which we both thought was a great idea. Not sure if they rent them but glad artists have access to them.
The Society of Northern Alberta Print-Artists is a non-profit, artist run centre dedicated to print making. SNAP was founded in 1982 as an independent, cooperatively-run fine art print shop in the Great West Saddlery Building, located in central Edmonton. In 1996 they opened the gallery.
When we moved into the reception area that day we were delighted to see all kinds of wonderful snacks. We were even given the choice of a “Wee Christmas Dinner” in a cup (turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and cranberries!) We made ourselves at home on the stools and noticed that a lady was teaching a printmaking class for some children who were making cards. The print making machine was from the 60’s I think she said, and was originally purchased at Sears! I brought some of the cards. Loved them.
Even the stools in the room looked like art to me! The whole building just makes one want to create!
