You’ve Got Mail!

Recently I took a cold, wintery day’s drive into the countryside to look for old fashioned mailboxes.

I am attracted to the many shapes and sizes of these battered receptacles.

And as I took photo after photo of these lonely sentinels I thought about all of us in this lockdown year.

Many of us stand alone, waiting for news from loved ones. And like these worn mailboxes we feel beaten up by life , cold, searching the sky for answers. Why? Why did this pandemic have to happen? We can’t move, feel almost paralyzed from fear of the future. Will our families survive this? Will we?

We are open to hear good news though . Our hearts await word from our children, our grandchildren, our parents , friends.

There IS good news to be found. ….the ‘Good News” of Easter . Here are a couple examples of ‘letters ‘ that can bring you peace……

MATTHEW 6:25

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?”

 PROVERBS 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

PHILIPPIANS 4:6-7

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

I’m also thinking that we often feel sorry for ourselves. I know I do. And perhaps like the mailboxes we wait for others to fill us up. But what are we waiting for? Let’s contact someone in our lives today who also needs to be filled with news from us! Let’s take a few minutes to write a letter to a friend we haven’t contacted in a long time. Let’s call our parents. Let’s email a colleague for a non-work related chat. Let’s stay in contact with our community who are also feeling alone and afraid.

Let’s do an act of kindness for a stranger, message our children, send a surprise out to ….anyone in our lives!

We might feel so alone right now but there are many ways to reach out , find peace, and bring joy to others.

We have to mask up but let’s not mask our feelings. We have to be apart …but let’s stand together.

And like those trusty old mailboxes let’s deliver a message of hope to the people in our world.

We are not alone.
