The Art Of The Brick (Part One)

When a friend from my pool told me about an exhibit at the Telus World of Science near my house, I decided that I would surprise Terry by including it in a mystery day together.

After going to mass and breakfast together we headed over there to see an incredible LEGO art exhibit that actually is more for adults than children!

The children we saw there were either older but moving through each room quickly, or bored and crying (ha ha) to be allowed to go to the final Lego play area.

But for us adults, the talent of Nathan Sawaya was undeniably amazing!!!!!

The first room was all about reproducing Lego versions of famous paintings. The intricate details and colours on these things were immediately astounding. Nathan also made a life-size version of “Whistler’s Mother”. Wow!!! You may recognize some of the other famous works…..

The next area held his Lego representations of sculptures. Some of these were life size and I can’t imagine how he got the curves in the bodies with those little bricks!

The section you see above was a bit about the artist….from his Lego self portrait, to his nightmare, to his girlfriend image (Courtney). The self portrait was about as tall as us. Then it was off to see his ideas about the human form…..

Nathan is so talented with not only his structures but the ideas for each of them. I love the group of people walking that turns into a giant ‘eye’ when you stand back, the swimmer, and the people made up out of shapes.

Fascinating too that Nathan is a lawyer who chose to leave that work for the more (in his opinion) satisfying work of creating art with Lego! It was also cool to see a fast motion video of him putting together one of his sculptures.
