Bittersweet Birthday

Our grandson, “O” turned 9 this week and we had a beautiful day together.

Have you ever had tough news at the same time that there was a celebration going on?

You sort of have to ‘put the block on it’ for a while to get through.

I remember this happened on the day my grandpa died. I was 2,000 miles away and on the way to perform in a lead role onstage when I received the call. Somehow I managed to carry on and perform because I put the block on it.

We received some tough news about a relative that is terminal as we were going into the Los Margaritas restaurant to celebrate O.

As it turned out it was perhaps a blessing because we could focus on the birthday boy for a few hours. After a really yummy lunch we took O and his brother “M” out to “U Paint” to do a couple of ceramic creations for the afternoon.

They did a super job and I can’t wait to see them fired!

After this fun activity we took them out for some cake pops and a couple of games of Tile Rummy before we headed back to the boys’ home for their dad’s homemade mac ‘n cheese dinner and a pavlova cake that dad made for dessert. Just the most yummy meal that O chose.

After dinner the tradition is that everyone at the table and takes their turn to say one thing they love about the birthday person. It was SO lovely. Everyone should do this. It sure makes the person feel loved.

I’ll leave you with a gorgeous sunset that we saw the next evening.

Dear God, thank you for O. Thank you for our families. Please help us make good decisions ….all made with love…and take care of us.

Amen.
