One Man’s Garbage….
I’ll never forget that one summer day I went to the back alley to retrieve the garbage cans when we lived in Calgary.
I tried to make sense of what I was seeing.
The ‘supposed to be empty’ garbage cans were overflowing . But they weren’t overflowing with ….garbage!
Popping out of the cans were bits and pieces of someone’s life.
When I looked down the alley many of the cans held ‘treasures’ like mine. What was going on?
In my garbage cans I found stuffed animals, clothing, crystal, and much more.
I actually still use the crystal bowl that I found because it matched some of my antique crystal I already owned.
What I figure is that someone’s relative died and they just couldn’t deal with disposing of the things in the home that they might have brought to Goodwill or the dump or to a garage sale, etc.
So I had fun going through my “treasures” and I thought about the old expression that has been used at garage sales, “One man’s garbage is another person’s treasure.”
I didn’t even have to leave my yard to shop!
The other special thing I found ,which I use often to this day, is an old cookbook.
My favourite, never fail, banana bread recipe comes from there.
It’s garage sale season coming up as people get to their spring cleaning.
Who knows? You may find some treasures yourself!
