The Air We Breathe

There is comfort in the familiar.

I feel you breathe next to me and as my eyes close for the night and I slip beneath the covers I notice we have found the same rhythm. Two souls, joining breath like the waves as they kiss the shore. In. Out. Hush. Sleep now.

I have missed you.

The dark holds us close. Enfolds us in warmth and peace. We dream.

Why is it when we’re apart that our nights are troubled, sleep so often interrupted?

And I know that although you were awakened too early in order to catch your flight, missing out on precious sleep time, this is not why you lie in now.

We are not in our house but we are home. A small smile tickles the corners of your mouth as you breathe deeply and evenly in your morning sleep.

Last night I slept through for the first time in weeks.

We breathe the same air and find our rhythm before the day even starts. You roll over, sigh. At peace.

And I smile too. You are finally here and I am at peace now too, comforted by the sound of your breathing… in….out….in.

It is going to be a good day. I let out a long breath. Happy.

Reunion.
