Canmore Downtown

Canmore was named in 1884 by Donald A. Smith, an employee of the Canadian Pacific Railway at the time. In 1886 Queen Victoria granted a coal mining charter to the Canadian Anthracite Coal Company and in 1887 the first mine was opened. The North West Mounted Police built their first barracks in Canmore in 1890. It was vacated in 1929 and turned into a private residence. Later, in 1989 the barracks was purchased back by the town and restored.

We saw quite a few historical looking buildings when we were walking or driving through the quaint town.

And of course it seems fitting to think of history when the date is November 11th.

May God bless the souls who gave their lives for our freedoms that we enjoy today.

Normally, if we’ve been to Canmore it’s been in the summer and we haven’t been here for years. Understandably, it looked so different. I remembered some lovely shops but I didn’t remember all of the historical buildings.

We ended up having a snack at “Graze” (where I saw a funny poster of a pig) and then later we continued on shopping around the town. I found a few Christmas gifts and cards.

Although it was snowing, the day was actually very mild. We didn’t really need our big, warmest winter wear.

We enjoyed the rest of our day by relaxing, playing Tile Rummy in the hotel’s games room, and then ‘vegging out’.

I think Canmore is also beautiful in the winter!
