Read a Book!
Now that I’m home the pace of life has slowed a bit but I still feel guilty when I take the time to read. Why IS that?
When I was near my parents every day, I noticed my Dad took time to read EVERY single day. He blocked out a time for it and even if it was just for a few minutes he took that time and advanced the story…and his joy.
Yes, joy.
We can recharge our ‘batteries’ when we read. I know we are often rushing off to work or to a meeting or to groceries or any number of activities . But then by early evening or late afternoon even, we can feel exhausted. But do we take a nap? Not often!
That’s another reason why taking the time to sit down ,with a cuppa, and read another chapter …can probably advance the next ‘chapter’ in our lives!
These are some of the books I’ve read just lately.
The Rose Code is a fantastic book based on the female code breakers in wartime at Bletchley Park. it’s not just the code breaking that is fascinating but the relationships between the three women through the years is SO good.
CATHRIN BRADBURY is a Senior News Director at CBC News. She has worked at The Globe and Mail, Metro News (Editor in Chief), and Maclean's magazine. I’m still reading her book The Bright Side and quite enjoying it. From Penguin Books:“The hilarious and moving story of how a modern woman's life can change utterly in a single year—and how, even when life whacks you in the head, you can find yourself rewarded with grace.”
If you want a ‘Big Mac for the Brain’ Second First Impressions’ is for you. Goodreads says….”From the USA Today bestselling author of The Hating Game and 99 Percent Mine comes the clever, funny, and unforgettable story of a muscular, tattooed man hired as an assistant to two old women—under the watchful eye of a beautiful retirement home manager.” I had many laugh out loud moments with this light book.
The Memory Box starts off as a complete page turner. I couldn’t put it down. But I found the ending unbelievable and it kind of soured my appreciation for the writing. NEW YORK TIMES and USA TODAY BESTSELLER says……..
”WHAT IF YOU GOOGLED YOURSELF AND DISCOVERED SOMETHING SHOCKING?In this gripping psychological thriller, with twists and turns until the very last page, a suburban mom Googles herself on a lark and discovers the shocking details of a past she doesn't remember.” I certainly loved the concept of this and I’d like to know what you thought about it.
I totally enjoyed Becoming Mrs. Lewis. If you’re a fan of C.S.Lewis as I am (I’ve read most of his books) then you’ll love this fictional story based on much research into the actual private life of Mr. Lewis and his wonderful friendship with Joy Davidman. Patti Callahan writes a story that is not only a wonderful peek into the life of C.S. Lewis but at a true love story.
I love the music of Steven Curtis Chapman. He is one of my ‘go to’ artists when I want to rise up and sing about love and/or faith. I’ve been to one of his live concerts here in Edmonton and we ended up “adopting” a boy named Emmanuel Donkor in Africa after that concert through Compassion Canada. Steven ‘walks the talk’ and so when I saw that he had a book out called Between Heaven & the Real World I knew I had to read it. He peppers each chapter with songs that either go with the theme or were written during that time. So I kept my phone beside me as I read and when he would mention a particular song I would play it while I read or just stopped to listen before I moved on. There are some heart-wrenching moments in the book (loss of one of his children) but also some incredible chapters about he and his wife, Mary Beth , who adopt and what they were able to accomplish to promote this beautiful service. It is also the story about how Steven got into the music business from the start. I loved it.
What are YOU reading lately? Do you have some favourite titles you could pass on? Haven’t found time to read?
Today’s the day! Put the kettle on and pick up a book. You won’t regret it.
Happy reading!
