The Window Cleaners

I was downtown recently to meet up with a dear friend and I happened to look up and see some window cleaners.

I’m a little afraid of heights so I couldn’t imagine doing that job.

But there they were, many many stories high and perhaps conquering their own fears to do their work.

What do they see when they clean the windows? I bet they’ve seen some things.

And we’ve all heard the expression “Eyes are the window to the soul”.

If this is true what do people see when they look at my eyes?

Do they see kindness? Love? Goodness?

Do they see scorn? Uncaring? Jealousy?

Do YOU feel seen? I remember that moment when strangers stopped ‘seeing’ me. One minute you are a young woman and perhaps hearing a ‘wolf whistle’ as you walk down the street and it seems like the next minute you are invisible.

I’m going to try and remember that feeling when I cross paths with an elderly person downtown. I’m going to make eye contact and smile. Because I know what it feels like to be passed by like a wall instead of gazed at like a pretty window.

Let’s really ‘see’ each other today.
