A Rosebud Christmas Adventure

A while back we purchased tickets to Rosebud’s “A One Man Christmas Carol” play.

We started off our mid-week journey with a breakfast visit at McDonald’s with some of our wonderful friends from my Peter Hemmingway pool group. We had lots of laughs and it was so good to see them all again.

Although the day before we had quite the snowstorm , that day the roads were pretty clear and the skies were blue so we continued on with our plans to drive four hours south and east to the small town of Rosebud, Alberta.

We had nice phone chats with our parents on the way there, did our rosary, and then started a new audio book called “Christmas Ghosts”. Good so far!

There was a gorgeous sunset and the roads were mostly clear.

We made it in time for raspberry/cherry pie and a cuppa!

After afternoon tea we headed to our room and Terry immediately fell asleep for a ‘long winter’s nap’. I worked on this blog…ha ha.

It’s all about the food when one travels so next up was a wonderful dinner cooked by “B.J.” at the Inn. She prepared her ‘famous’ meatballs over rice along side sweet potatoes and a parmesan covered roasted pepper. Delicious! Dessert was a mocha cream pie with coffee. (Yes, we were spoiled.) And we ended our day with a game of Tile Rummy in the dining room and one of our new Advent traditions which is that Terry reads a Christmas story to me every night until Christmas. This year’s book is called “Christmas on the Island” by Jenny Colgan.

After a good night’s sleep in the well appointed room at The Country Inn, we headed to the breakfast room ( More food!) for a yummy meal which included a homemade scone and house made apricot/peach jam, fresh fruit bowl with honey yogurt, cucumber strips, parmesan baked tomato, and quiche. The raspberry/apple juice and camomile tea were the perfect compliment to the repast.

Off to the play…..!

The matinee performance at the Rosebud Opera House was fantastic. Nathan Schmidt played ALL the roles in this wonderful adaptation by Ron Reed of “ A Christmas Carol.”

Direction by Morris Ertman was outstanding too as one soon forgot that we were witnessing the parts played by only one person and fell into seeing all the characters in our ‘mind’s eye’ while “The Story Teller”(Nathan) brought us on Scrooge’s journey to redemption and love.

The simple set worked brilliantly too with curtains standing in for everything from Scrooge’s bed curtains to the skirts of Christmas Present.

The ride home is another story. Not so feel good or cozy.

A snow/wind storm came in and made visibility very dicy as I drove the many hours north to our home. The roads appeared dry under the drifting snows though so I never felt in danger of sliding off . I took my time and pulled over half way for a break. We arrived home safely in time to order pizza and watch the finale of “Survivor” so it was a good adventure all in all. And thanks be to God for our wonderful Christmas treat.
