Heading to Hilo

Yesterday we prepared to drive to the opposite side of the island to the town called Hilo.(He-low)

The weather was so perfect and although Hilo is known for its rain forest type weather(tons of rain) it was virtually cloudless as we set out.

One thing I didn’t expect was a rooster and chicken party at the gas station we stopped at about a third of the way there,

It was fun to drive through the historic town of Honoka’a. So much character. It is 150 years old and linked to the development of sugar plantations.

The vegetation on the way to Hilo was gorgeous and the trees were massive. After our excellent lunch at Rueben’s Mexican we did a bit of shopping down the street and at some markets.

One of our favourite parts of the day was discovering Gulch park which looked like it could have been in the movie Jurassic Park!

We came to the conclusion that this park must have been known mostly by locals because it was off the busy highway and not “touristy”. We knew it would take at least a couple of hours to return to Kona so we head back and were greeted with the prettiest sunset!
