We Belong Here

My sister, Paula and I belong to the “Budding Art Collective” a group which promotes original art.

This is how we found out that there was to be a showcase for artists at King’s University to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The program was called We Belong Here and it involved many different kinds of artists and events including a panel discussion which included a few female composers, orchestra conductors, and painters.

I only entered one painting : “Waiting” which was the basis for my first album cover. Paula brought 3 beautiful pieces, all of which centered around the theme of belonging.

After the panel talk, which was pretty interesting in many ways (but unfortunately not mic’d )it was time to move into the theatre for a wonderful evening of live music and painting.

There were so many types of songs, duos, trios, full choirs, guitarists, a sax player and there was even a live artist. She was actually our contact for the event.

One thing that I thought was cool was that in between each act they called up an artist to talk about her journey or her painting method or her inspiration, etc.

Paula spoke about her (beating) cancer journey which saw her losing her paying job but becoming an watercolour ink artist and musician.

I spoke about my love of acting which also came to a hard stop but because of my arthritis. This pivot also caused me to look for other creative outlets which became art and music as well. I told the (full to capacity) audience about my painting being used for my 1st album and I actually received a commission to work with a young musician on his new album cover. Fun!
