Slow Down, You’re Movin’ Too Fast

This is a line from one of my favourite songs, “Feelin’ Groovy”. (Yes, I’ve just dated myself on that comment…ha ha. )

But when I live in a ‘go, go, go’ state I don’t feel so ‘groovy’.

As Brian Morykon, reminds me :

“The impulse to get to a desired future, be it 30 minutes or 30 months away, may present itself in overt or subtle ways, in exterior busyness or interior restlessness.”

Right now I am feeling too busy.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE all the things I’m doing right now and I certainly love the folks I’m doing them with….but when I start to feel that I’m not getting to my usual routines, I feel a mild anxiety.

(Not the kind of anxiety that causes me to worry about anything but more like the unsettled feeling that I get when I’m behind in work- be it my housework, my online work, or my spiritual work. )

How about that feeling like you can’t catch up or that you are thinking about the future so much that you forget to enjoy the present?

I see many young folks that have their families in SO many activities that I feel stressed just imagining the scheduling.

And even in retirement we can actually over volunteer and/or take on too many projects!

Brian Morykon wrote a nice prayer about slowing down that I’d like to share with you :

“Jesus, I invite you to show me when my heart is clouded by hurry.

Teach me to move at your pace. Drive out the greed that tries to force into the present that which belongs to another time.

Help me refrain from picking unripe fruit.

Make me present to people, conversations, and moments throughout my day where you are at work.

And thank-you for your patience, your otherworldly patience, that waits for me to slow down time….

….. and time again.”

AMEN!
