An Extra Weekend of Fun

Funny to arrive home after being away in Vancouver with family for a month and then having some of that family almost immediately arrive to stay for the weekend with us in Edmonton.

I think it was the first time that all 3 of our oldest son’s boys had been away from their parents for that long. One might wonder if we would have some trouble with them being blue, or bored, or even misbehaving. But I am so proud to tell you that these boys were just the best best BEST.

Terry got up in the wee hours to take the parents back to the airport and by the time I woke up it was time for a nice pancake breakfast that he made. Then Terry spent pretty much the whole day out in the garage where the gang worked with wood to create an original putting game and unique toys. He taught the older boys how to use a handsaw, jigsaw, and electric drill. Our youngest guy preferred to stay in the house with me, Nonny, and play the “Matching” game. (I am ashamed to admit this 4 year old won most of the games!)

The first project was to create a golf game where you receive higher points the smaller the hole you put the golf ball through.

I think this game could easily be played on a summer’s day outside as well. (They played it in our breezeway).

Next up were the toys and in the later afternoon even “L” joined the big boys to make a wee wooden bird and to paint his tiny house. We were able to pack up some of the smaller creations in their suitcases later that weekend but we had to ship the biggest car out to their Vancouver home.

The next day it was Nonny’s turn to lead the craft sessions.

I decided upon crafts using white, paper coffee cups. I pre-cut little human characters out of 3 cups using an exacto knife. Then I stacked those 3 cups on another 3 cups. The idea is that the boys would use markers to create little people inside my design and then when they spun the top cup to the right, they would then draw another one and another so that with every twist a new little figure appears.

This craft was completed fairly quickly so after that I brought out tons of craft materials and Terry helped them hot glue gun these and surplus paper coffee cups to create their designs. The oldest boys created dragons and our middle guy made a sailboat.

After craft time we got our footwear on and headed over to the West Edmonton Mall for a fun game of Mini Golf!

Lots of laughter and even little “L” did pretty darn well!

We arrived home in time to have pizza with our movie night. The boys chose the movie “Up” which is SO good. The next morning it was off to church then brunch at “Hap’s” , the usual Sunday morning rituals. ( It was great to see our friend, Jazz, again with her 2 adorable children (those also being our godchildren) and her friend, Jen.) We turned some heads at mass and brunch with our huge gang of little ones.

That afternoon I was lucky to have a bit of time alone for my weekly Zoom call with my ‘besties’ while Terry took the boys out for some fresh air at the park.

Bringing the boys back to the airport that afternoon was bittersweet. We’ll miss the cuddles and giggles among other things but we’ll actually be seeing then again at the debut of Terry’s musical “Dream” in Rosebud, Alberta in just a couple of weeks. Can’t wait!
