Church

What is church?

Some say it’s a building.

Some say it’s stained glass and pews.

In the early days Christians were persecuted (some things never change) and had to meet secretly in homes.

I’ve had the blessing of visiting many gorgeous churches and cathedrals and basilicas in my years on the planet.

And yes, this kind of church honours God with the most gorgeous of tapestries, the shiniest of gold tabernacles, and the most beautiful paintings and altars I’ve ever seen.

And when the lights are low and only candles are burning, the flame light and shadows lead me to a very contemplative kind of prayer as well.

I’ve also been to wee clapboard churches that are filled with singing parishioners that seem to raise the roof with their joy.

What is church?

To me church is not the building at all but the people inside the building. We come together as a community of believers to worship God who made the world and his Son who came to redeem it.

I am honoured to be a part of the Catholic church and so happy that there are SO many kinds of churches and faiths out there in which to worship God. As long as they all lead to a God who is love then I think we’re on the right path.

Here are some photos of my church building ( St. John the Evangelist in Edmonton) and others I have regularly attended…..enjoy!
