Hapuna Beach Day

It is so interesting to see the nature on this island. Terry photographed some toadstools and a goat standing on his hind legs at the golf course.

We chose a day to head in the opposite direction from the Volcano trip to see what we could see. We headed north and we once again saw some wild goats in the trees!

You never know what you’ll see when you choose a random road so that’s what we often do! I am usually the driver with Terry as navigator. I was trying to choose between heading up the mountain or heading to the ocean and I chose ocean.

Sure enough, we rounded a corner on this tiny street and saw this old church dating back to 1856 AND it was open just that day for tours! “Melissa” told us much of the history of the place. Not surprising it was still standing when you find out the walls were formed from lava rock and coral! In that interior shot you can see a screen with an image of the pastor and the next frame is Terry standing with her. The Hoku Loa church had been through its troubles though as it survived a recent flood and even a fire of its roof a while back.

It was fun to hear about the history of it and then we were lucky because Melissa told us about a place we could find close by that would be perfect for our picnic day. I honestly think we would never have chosen that road if it weren’t for her.

Terry liked the picnic lunch I’d packed but we weren’t actually alone for our meal…ha ha ha.

The Hapuna Beach area was so great! Lots of shade if you wanted it, sand, and calm waters for snorkelling if you should choose. I actually was able to swim in the ocean, which I normally can’t do because of the lava rock entrance and the big waves. But this was a sandy beach with a calm cove and a sand floor for your feet. And it was WARM!

We had a chance to read as well and we were so happy to find yet another gorgeous corner of Kona, Hawaii.
