Keeping Your Sense of Humour in the Advent Season

It gets dark here about 4:30 pm now.

The darker season can bring some folks down and we all need a good laugh about now.

The other night Terry and I watched the comedian Dennis Regan. Gosh, that guy is funny. And some funny trivia about him is that his brother Brian is also a professional stand up comedian. We laughed until we were wiping our eyes from tears and it was a great thing to do to settle down for the night after a busy day.

That’s Dennis to the left and Brian to the right above. ( Also: check out Sebastian Maniscalco and Tom Papa. Hilarious too.)

Terry and I have also been starting to watch corny Christmas movies. As long as I am able to listen to Terry’s audible personal “soundtrack” and opinions on the bad script and acting we can have a lot of laughs at these crazy things. And yes, I know that a lot of you love the feel good feelings they can also invoke. But for us, as former actors, I think we just can’t get over the rote details that almost all of these movies have in common.

Hmmmm. Do they involve a prince or a castle? Is there a gazebo somewhere in sight? Do the unaware yet soon-to-be leads bump into each other and stare lovingly into each other’s faces before they suddenly move apart? HA HA.

There are excellent movies out there too. We LOVED Belfast and it has many uplifting and even funny parts to get you through some of the tougher scenes.

I listened to an excellent podcast the other day on This American Life about “Spark Birds”. There are so many great podcasts out there to lift you up and make you think. Also check out…..

( I haven’t heard it (yet) but it is a top rated podcast on Google).

You might not feel comfortable yet sitting in a theatre/concert space yet with hundreds of people but if Covid taught us one thing, there are tons of great shows out there to stream or Zoom.

We recently watched the J.P. Hoe Hoe Hoe Holiday Show out of Winnipeg and it was a blast.

I heard about it because my sister, Paula’s daughter, Nat, plays cello as part of the band (Nat is on my c.d.’s as well. She’s just awesome.)

It is very uplifting to watch a Christmas show or listen to Christmas music.

And things will go wrong in life. That’s a given. I try not to wallow in worry and a ‘woe is me’ persona. A positive attitude will take you far and help you through most if not all situations.

Let’s turn that frown upside down. Let’s smile more. Let’s LAUGH more.

Have a great day today.

And as the great Monty Python once said, “ Always look on the bright side of life! “
