The Miracle Girl

Ten years ago my sister, Paula, had breast cancer and was given a couple months to get her life in order with her new husband, Albert. She underwent an emergency partial lumpectomy and had lymph nodes removed too.

The day week (day?) we returned home from the Oncologist’s she received a package in the mail from a Dr. Pandey who had been working with our Dad at the University of Windsor on an experimental cancer treatment. Our Dad helped secure the funding through the U. of W. and Dr. Pandey discovered that a particular form of dandelion root could cure certain types of cancers.

When our dad told Dr. P that his own daughter had just been diagnosed with cancer Doctor Pandey asked permission to send a bag of the tea out to Paula. They thought, “What have we got to lose?”

Hundreds of people across the world started praying for Paula. She took the tea religiously. And she contacted a company called “ I.S.M” in Ontario that helps build up the immune system (ISM Immune System Management Aminomics™ - the research and diagnostics of amino acid imbalances & design and manufacture of customized therapeutic compounds to promote homeostasis.)

She started chemo (the strongest there is …but had to stop because it wasn’t even touching the tumours that had invaded her little body.)

We tried to make her laugh by dressing her bald head up in silly costumes (see Paula in her ‘Star Trek” outfit above at Hallowe’en.) And we had to laugh the night that cancer weakened Paula was pushing me in my wheelchair up ramps to an Oiler’s hockey game one evening. We don’t let much stop us!

We picked out a nice wig for Paula and it was so realistic that folks asked her where she went to get her hair styled and cut! (see Paula above before they cut and styled the wig)

Two weeks later, we returned to the Oncologist and she had a funny look on her face. She said that she had consulted with 6 other Oncologists to see if what she was seeing was real. But yes, all of Paula’s tumours were …GONE!

Paula had received a miracle.

I love it that I have one sister that lives close by. And I love spending time with my ‘miracle girl’. She still has some physical challenges left over from the time of chemo (that ate away at a lot of the cartilage in her neck and spine and caused her to need regular oxygen) but she has THE best attitude and is SO much fun to be around.

We recently spent an afternoon together at Elk Island.

I will miss my sister, Paula, who has flown off to Ontario to be near our parents and other siblings. I hope to join her and all of my sisters (brother, parents, and other friends and relatives)for a bit next month.

Ten years cancer free! And very single day with her (and for her) is a gift from God.
