The Artisan Colony
Much like the Vancouver Islands, there are many artisans here in Kona, Hawaii.
The art varies from blown glass, to paintings, to sculptures and so much more. Check out the details in the turtle painting above. The whole of both turtles were covered in these incredible designs.
The Artisan Colony is a pretty weathered area up the hill in Kona that is filled with dilapidated galleries.
We decided to check it out this year and see how it was faring since the last time we visited it years ago.
The buildings are even MORE weathered now but mostly still standing and the galleries filled with gorgeous art!
I thought the prices were pretty reasonable for the amount of work that went into the creations. It sure was fun to walk up the hill and weave our way in and out of the brightly coloured buildings.
I don’t know if some of the buildings were being held together by paint, ha ha, but the bright colours made up for the falling down business establishments in most cases.
We noticed that a heritage type, old theatre building was burnt out. Always sad to lose a part of history. But we did see that the old Post Office remained.
It was a really nice day to walk around the wee town and we ended it in a perfect way but having the best mango croissants you could ever imagine. Yum!
