Sylvan Lake
As you very well know, we love to go on roadtrips. There is SO much to see and find even after over 40 years out west.
One Tuesday we decided to head south to Sylvan Lake. When our children were small we sometimes rented a small cottage and spent a week out near this incredibly shallow lake. It was just perfect for little ones and as the children got older we still found much to entertain ourselves. More about that later.
Because we had been away for so long we really didn’t know what we would find. Would the town be all but boarded up? Would the lake be too high or polluted? As we pulled into the town it was indeed virtually unrecognizable but not because it was in bad shape. Quite the opposite! The town now has hotels, and many many nice looking shops, beautiful, well cared for sidewalks, and the lake is still shallow and clean!
We found a lovely spot right on the grass above the sand with a terrific view of the water to enjoy our picnic lunches and play our Tile Rummy game.
It started to get hot so Terry put up our new tent.
When I went out to find a washroom I noticed painted signs about every 6 feet along the sidewalk….
Well, we quickly got the tent packed up…ha ha…(tents are so easy to move these days compared to the old pegs and ropes kind)…and felt a little sheepish.
After moving into the shade we got out our watercolours and tried for a painting or two. Terry made up one and got inspired by the view for his other one. I tried to quickly paint an image I saw as well.
I was also mentioning things we used to do at Sylvan Lake with our children besides waterplay. We ended up bringing large, metal shovels, pails, and all sorts of things to create these giant sandcastles with the gang. I remember one was of King Kong leaning over a cityscape. They were quite involved and detailed and we all loved it and got quite a few comments from vacationers passing by.
We read our books for awhile after cleaning up and ended up home about 8 pm. It was a super trip.
