Sketchin’ at Manini Beach

One day, we headed out to find “Captain Cook” beach. We somehow missed the turnoff but instead of turning around we used our phones and typed in “beach near me”.

Well, that worked like a charm because on an upcoming, unobtrusive side road we were told to turn right and to head down the hill. We would never have even noticed the road but down we drove.

The road was so curvy and was a strange mixture of very poor looking buildings with dilapidated vehicles piled up or mansions with incredible gardens and gated entrances!

When we finally arrived down at the bottom we had to take a narrow, one car lane and find a spot on the edge of the road. The entrance to Manini Beach was there and sure enough it was a small patch of grass with an incredible view to the roaring surf. You couldn’t safely get your feet in the water because the steep shoreline was all black and white coral rocks but there were picnic tables available and lots of places to set up ‘camp’ so to speak. It certainly seemed like a “only locals know about it’ park.

We found a nice table under a tree for our lunch and of course our beloved Tile Rummy game before we attempted to sketch a bit or read.

The one thing that I didn’t like was that there was only one port o’ potty and it wasn’t ‘accessible’. (In other words, no handles, smaller size, and I couldn’t use the seat I brought.) Terry had to help me up with the door partially open so that wasn’t cool. But the other reason was that once I was outside I happened to look up….and the entire thing was covered in giant webs and spiders!!!!!!

Because of this I won’t be in a hurry to return but it certainly was a lovely day before the dreaded washroom visit. Ha ha.
