Winter Picnic

Can you imagine telling someone in say….Florida….that at only +8 it was so warm we should go on a picnic? ha ha.

But it’s all relative because after spending weeks indoors with -20 to -40 weather …. plus eight seemed …balmy!

In fact, I think it was minus twenty two the day before!

So: Terry suggested we prepare for our first winter picnic for 2022 and I was all for it!

I made us a simple picnic lunch of sandwiches, salads, apples and cookies. I already made coffee for Terry and we stopped at a Timmies for mine.

We decided to go to Laurier Park, close to our house, as we know there are lots and lots of tables there.

It was surprising to see so many other families taking advantage of the warmer day there already.

Although Terry knows what he has to deal with I feel sorry for how much work it is for him in a situation like this.

It takes everything I have not to twist an ankle , knee, or just fall due to my arthritic legs so Terry does the bulk of the work.

He first of all had to clear a path for me to get to the table we chose. Because of the melting, he was able to do this with his big Sorel boots which he shuffled along till the path was done. During this time he was carrying all of our things …including a shovel to clear off the foot and a half of snow before we could sit!

Then, after he laid out the ‘moving blanket’ and then a picnic blanket on the table top, he came back for me. He was my rudder as I held onto his arm and tried to climb over the first , small snow bank and then all the way to the table.

What a great guy!

It just felt so darned good to be outside ! We bring a cushion for our seats too so we were also protected from the cold in that way.

After our yummy lunch ( why does everything always taste so good when you’re outside?) we played our beloved Tile Rummy game.

We were out about two hours and by that time my toes were nearing frostbite zone so it was time to go. The sun was already low in the sky too. Next time I’ll wear my Sorels .

Have you tried a winter picnic? It’s fun and helps melt away the winter blues!
