Special Delivery

I’ve heard of ‘mail order brides’ but…..mail order babies?

Apparently, before 1920 it was actually possible to mail out children through the U.S. Postal Service.

I’m not kidding! Can you imagine?

The kiddies had to weigh less than 50 lbs. and stamps were actually attached to their clothing as a form of payment.

I read that it was actually more cost efficient than sending their children on train transportation if they did it via mail.

The children were in the mail car and supervised and fed by mail clerks ! ( I find myself adding a lot of exclamation points !!!)

There is a record of one example of someone being mailed a distance of over 700 miles, (Florida to Virginia), and it cost a mere 15 cents worth of stamps.

Good thing this didn’t exist when my kids were young. What if I was having a bad week?

Here ya go, Grandma and Grandpa!
