When I know better but I lose my footing
Cause I want what I want and nobody’s looking
And I tell myself that I won’t regret it
A moment of guilt then I’ll just forget it
Cause everyone does it so I twist and turn it
And I make excuses like nobody’s perfect
What’s right and what’s wrong aren’t they just illusions
Its just a small thing and I’m only human
It’s your voice in my ear
Even when you’re not here
In my moments of weakness bringing me back
With four words stopping me dead in my tracks
Telling me “You’re better than that”
When I blur lines that I know that I shouldn’t
And harbour intentions that I wish I wouldn’t
Abandon my judgement and think nothing of it
When I start believing that I am above it
If only you thought less of me than you do
Living up to that would be easy
But knowing I’m someone that you can believe in
Gives me a faith I find myself needing
Though I’ve given up on those that would doubt me
What drives me to prove that you’re right about me…
Is your voice in my ear
Even when you’re not here
In my moments of weakness bringing me back
With four words stopping me dead in my tracks
Your voice I hear
Only your voice making it clear
In my moments of weakness bringing me back
With four words stopping me dead in my tracks
Telling me “You’re better than that”
I’ve been thinking about good choices.
I have been reading another book ( I read a lot of his books) by Matthew Kelly called “Life Is Messy” .
He tells one story about how his dad was a very good man and a good influence for Matthew when he was growing up.
One day , Matthew and his brother found a soccer ball at the park . They ran home and excitedly asked their dad if they could keep it. “ Please dad, oh pleeeeeeaaaase ! “
Well, their dad answered by asking questions like, “ How would feel if you lost your soccer ball? “ “ How would you feel if it was gone when you went back to find it?”
After several of these type questions the brothers felt they had to return it so they sadly went back to the park with the ball and lo and behold, they saw a boy with his dad looking for something. Sure enough , they were looking for the soccer ball and were thrilled to get it back.
Later , after the boys returned, their dad was waiting for them with a gift : a brand new soccer ball of their very own.
Matthew said he never forgot the lesson of making good choices as all choices affect others and also who we will eventually become.
This wonderful song and beautiful book have really reminded me just how important it is to make good choices.
When we are about to make a decision that perhaps isn’t the best one, we might hear a small voice in our own heads whispering….” You’re better than that.”
