Skywalkers
We’ve had a wonderful time in Sidney thanks to the recommendation from our dear friend, Bev.
Crazy that Bev actually moved to Sidney the very day we arrived. We had the opportunity to help her out a bit with advice, hanging pictures, and shopping. And we enjoyed a wonderful meal together one evening. God bless, you, Bev, in your new adventure!
One day, after we hung some pictures, we left to head out to Nanaimo.
We randomly pulled over at a sign for the Malahat Skywalk and not knowing what that was, decided to check it out.
The ‘Skywalk” is a giant ramp that goes up and up and up and up until you feel like you are walking in the sky!
You can probably imagine how difficult even the slightest ramp elevation was for me to maneuver but with Terry’s gentle push up the slopes I did actually make it to the top.
Malahat SkyWalk immerses visitors in nature as they embark along a 600 m (1,968 ft) elevated, wooden walkway rising 20 m (65 ft) through an arbutus and Douglas fir forest.
I don’t think you’d want to go up the Skywalk without a hat or hood as the wind picks up SO much and for us was quite cold! On the way up and across to the massive viewing structure we passed some unique, carved/assembled sculptures. We also passed a slice of log with indications of how old the original tree was as the rings told the tale of what was going on in the world at each year.
I saw an eagle flying way below and of course the views were expansive and beautiful.
Terry braved a rope/net area where you could look straight down. We also had the option of taking a curvy slide all the way down. No thanks…ha ha, but children and some adults loved it!
That night we had dinner in Nanaimo and we also just happened upon a lovely area called the “Heritage Mews”. We enjoyed a delicious (but salty!) wood fired pizza dinner with a butter lettuce salad.
This has been a lovely break from the snow.
