It is truly summer here now . Yesterday saw Edmonton experience a new record for the hottest day recorded for July 9th : 34 c.
These last couple of weeks have been so busy at The Works in downtown Edmonton , Churchill Square. Terry and I carted about 30 paintings over to our purchased tent space where we spent 13 gruelling days in the sun and heat .
We met many many marginalized/homeless people who certainly could not afford to purchase original paintings. But the good news is that they really seemed to appreciate the chance to …well…appreciate art !
Thank God we sold enough art to pay for the booth ( and cover parking and dinners) but we certainly did not ‘make’ any money.
And to boot we ended up receiving a $75.00 parking ticket for the couple of minutes ( literally !) that we spent unloading the art on that first morning. UGH !
Well, the other night we were blessed to hear about a documentary called Nicky’s Family .
I know that it is corny to say this overused expression but all the same : this movie changed my life !
After watching what this young man did for the jewish children in Hitler’s era ( and so humbly and without a second thought to the outcome) and what the repercussions are all these years later I made a decision.
From now on :100 % of the proceeds ( after costs) of any of our art sold will go to Charity Terry and I are in the process of choosing the charity that speaks to our heart .
We are also thinking of asking other artists to join us in this endeavour. ” Painting For The Poor “?
What a wonderful but bittersweet feeling it is to come home after an incredible month away with my extended south western ontario family. Great to reunite with my husband- difficult to say good-bye to Ontario friends and family.
I was so blessed to be able to spend quality time with my in-laws and my parents . I had a birthday mid-week away with my husband at Niagara on the Lake, a fantastic reunion with my dear girlfriends from grade school/high school , hung out with my sisters, Mary and Pam and brother, John ( who gave me a cool tour of his work at Caesar’s, Windsor), and celebrated my Mom’s 80th on our famous sister weekend , ” The Girls’ Weekend Away ” .
We also celebrated my Dad’s 83rd birthday , went to a funeral for an old friend, and of course Mother’s Day was in there too !
I had some tough days with 2 of my closest friends, Rose and Barb , when we went away for a B & B weekend in Waterloo. Prayers needed for peace and health for situations both are concerned about.
Throughout the month I was able to continue to illustrate 2 of my children’s books, paint for enjoyment and for the upcoming ” The Works” in Edmonton, and work on the ” Elvis song ” for my friend, Jason.
Family. Friends. Creativity. And a prayerful reminder that life is short. May was lovely.
I have been in many studios and have had some great experiences. Emily’s studio experience did not disappoint. She is not only fun to work with but very professional. Emily had cool ideas to make each song extra special. I can’t wait to hear what she is going to do with the mixing and mastering.
Emily helped me choose 4 songs from the 7 new songs I have written and I am excited to share them with you soon.
My 2 day recording sessions were a belated Christmas gift. Perfect.
What an incredible month I have enjoyed with my family in Vancouver. My husband, Terry , and myself drove out to ” Kits ” for 5 weeks for the impending births of our 2 sons’ first borns.
We are now first time grandparents to wee baby Otto Jones Bachynski and Myro René Bachynski both born while we were here! I found time to write a little lullaby for the babies ( they will have to share it , I’m afraid ) and I am looking forward to singing it for the parents soon.
I have also been busy in some spare time ( which has been few and far between !) illustrating for 2 of the 4 books I am commissioned with this year. They are all children’s books for 2 different authors.
It has also been such a blessing to miss out on all the snowstorms that the rest of Canada has been experiencing. Flowers everywhere and green green green !
Looking forward to returning home and recording with Emily Loewen at her brand new recording studio! Life is SO exciting !
But ….it will be hard to leave my new babies …and their parents !
It feels like a bit of a blur with the months of preparation for our move . ( We are now living in a rental home while our actual home is gutted and renovated for this year . It should be completed by mid November .)
But once we had finally moved in the last box and unpacked all of it ( the rest being in our basement storage here) we took off for Mexico . I was going to write…” Yay !” but it wasn’t really a trip to shout in joy about. I proceeded to be attacked by the flu, then a brutal cough/cold, then Montezuma’s Revenge. The ‘all inclusive ” included construction sounds from morning to night and by the time I slipped in some water and fell on my right side I was certainly ready to fly home for some rest…ha ha.
Although we sat in the ‘baby section from hell’ ..ha ha again…we were home in 5 1/2 hours and ready to rest by getting back to work.
Then : I fell again. This time on some black ice off our our back porch. Oh man !
So I am learning to walk with crutches and my left knee and ankle are sprained.
But : the great news is that nothing is broken. I also had some incredible visits from old and new friends ….who brought me yummy meals and excellent conversations.
I have just been commissioned by a new connection to illustrate another children’s book and with my down time was able to start painting some sample artworks.
Lastly, I wrote a new song ! Working title : I Heard Your Voice.
I am healing. I have friends. I am able to create. I am blessed.
Although it takes me 45 minutes to drive to Sherwood Park I must say that the folks at Inspirations Book and Coffee shop make me feel like I’ve arrived home when I show up.
And although my musical partner, Jim, wasn’t feeling well and went home before the concert I had a wonderful time singing my tunes from 7 – 8:30 p.m. . The sound system was set up to perfection by ‘ Elvis’ and the owner, Stan, was always near by to give me a helping hand in setting up, a cup of hot tea and a treat at break …..and even applause ! Stan even purchased 6 CDs ( 3 of Waiting and 3 of Hope Is) so I feel very taken care of at the store.
A lovely night where I got to meet new folks and share my newest material.
For months now my husband and I have been choosing every little thing imaginable as we prepare for our first big renovation. Our home is about 60 years old.
For weeks now we have been sorting, giving, selling, and packing packing packing our beloved things.
Somehow I have found peace amidst the Christmas rush, family times and the big Christmas decorating take down. I attribute it to my prayers and the prayers I have received from others. Thank you !
Also , I have found a window to create here and there. I have written TWO new songs in the last couple of weeks and am almost finished a new still life. It feels SO good to have this balance in my life.
Only one more week until we move out ! ( into a small, rental home for the year) . Life is so interesting !
I wish you an incredible 2015 ! The world news already has SO many upsetting stories. Let’s try and stay connected to each other through prayer and spreading love …even if it’s just through a daily smile.
